About
Learn about who I am personally, as a creative, and how I grew to who I am.
Hi, I am Alynah Angeles, and for the longest time, I have never been able to sit still. I have always been a curious person, which has led me to a whole lot of different hobbies and personal endeavours. Some of which include: writing, drawing, music/singing, sewing, research in economics and fashion but most importantly, gaming. I grew up with an older brother, and one of the only ways I could bond with him due to our age gap was through video games; this gave me a very early introduction to the scene and I was immediately hooked onto The Sims, GTA, and a plethora of MMORPGs that have fallen into obscurity. I always loved how I could walk around, explore, and liked the idea of experiencing a different world apart from my own. I think that is a value that I still carry with me to this day, and is the reason why I choose to be in this industry.
With all of the early exposure to different forms of media along with my innate curiosity, comes the craving to create something of my own; as I move through the world, the things I see and the experiences I’ve gained throughout my life give me the desire to contribute my personal worldview with those around me and in that same regard, learn from those around me as well. That being said, what better medium than games? I have always believed that games were the ultimate gateway into immersing yourself into another person’s shoes, being able to “play” as an identity completely apart from your own, whilst also being given the agency to reflect your own ideals onto the character.
I truly believe it is the greatest tool for storytelling.
As a Creator
As a creator, I have always been drawn to the idea of creating media that can have a strong emotional impact on the consumer; this definitely started off on the internet, where I engaged in fandoms as most teenagers do. I spent my days writing fanfiction, drawing fanart, and making photo edits of all of my favourite shows and bands, albeit not very good at the time, taught me to channel my energy towards learning new softwares and techniques in the hopes of conveying what I wanted. As I grew older, I started to branch out and create original works, all of which drove me to pursue a career in the arts and media industry. After a year at Sheridan College's Art Fundamentals program, I learned about their Game Design program and surprisingly, got accepted!
I was a bit nervous, given that I was going into this with an art background and the tiniest bit of C++ experience, but I was driven by the desire to be a part of a team and create games like the ones that I grew to love so much growing up. Throughout my years at Sheridan, I have learned a whole lot about Game Design, the process behind each feature, and the pipeline of creating a game with many people. I also learned a lot about myself, my strengths, weaknesses, and how to tackle each hardship that comes with being a Game Designer and artist. My Professional Mission and Goal
Some of my absolute favourite games have always been ones that have a strong narrative with a strong emphasis on player agency and focus on interpersonal relationships. My absolute favourite being "Until Then" and "Life is Strange." As a young Filipino woman in the industry, it is quite hard to find games that I can personally relate to, so these games have changed my life in a way that inspires me to create games that can have that same impact on others. Games have also brought me closer to a lot of the people I love today, being able to experience games, having shared goals, and working in a team is everything to me--I would say a lot of my best memories are of my friends and I playing games together. It is my personal goal to be a part of projects that do the same for other players, not only in terms of engaging gameplay, but also change the way people see the world, just as how "Until Then" and "Life is Strange" have done for me.
